‘Take What You Need’ from Exploring the Paintings of Frank Auerbach
What The Course is About:
On day 1, through demonstration, ideas are presented about the techniques of Auerbach, his wet-on-wet oil techniques, his colour and compositions. You will then select paintings for your own individual study.
On day 2 and 3, using charcoal, on location by the Thames, you will search for composition. Then, you will attempt to construct your own paintings working with both your own intuitive feel for colour and any ideas identified during the first day’s analysis.
Materials Required:
What to bring to the first session: Bring to the first class any drawing and painting materials you possess. Paper and further items can be purchased from the school shop.

What will I achieve?The aim is ‘to take what you need’ from analysing Frank Auerbach paintings to see if a better understanding can be an aid to improving the quality of your own paintings when painting on location.
